This program is ideal for anyone interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine or veterinary technology. Volunteers will be involved in many aspects of clinical procedures including observation of medical examinations in appointment rooms and surgical procedures. Any special focus or interest in avian and exotic medicine should be mentioned during application process as special scheduling may be necessary.
The beginning level volunteers should graduate the program with the following skills:
- Administration of subcutaneous injections including vaccinations
- Setting up and reading fecal floatation for parasites
- Safe restraint of canines and felines for medical examinations and treatment
- Performing nail trims
- Expression of anal glands
- Flushing and treating infected ears
- Administering subcutaneous fluids
- Cleaning and assembling surgical instrument packs
- Cage cleaning
- Monitoring patient comfort
- Acquiring vital signs
- Surgical observation
More advanced volunteers will also focus on:
- Canine and feline blood collection
- Surgical assisting
- Monitoring and recovery of anesthetized patients
Due to the hands-on nature of the program, volunteers will be provided with a Volunteer t-shirt and must wear scrub pants or jeans and closed toe shoes comfortable for standing long periods of time.
